PetSmart grant to assist with spay/neuter, vet care

Posted

One of the most common reasons pets are surrendered to shelters is lack of affordable veterinary care. Due to cost and other barriers, pets in under-resourced communities often do not have access to basic care like spay/neuter services, vaccinations, dental care and other medical and preventive care.

With a $40,000 grant from PetSmart Charities, the Spay Neuter Action Program (SNAP) and Doña Ana County Humane Society (DACHS) are collaborating to support pets and pet owners in need of these services through DACHS’ Animal Relief Fund and SNAP’s spay/neuter vouchers.

“This has been a challenging year for all of us,” said Julie Miller, SNAP board president. “With the help of PetSmart Charities, SNAP will be able continue our mission of helping spay and neuter pets despite the pandemic. As of January 2021, we are proud to report more than 23,000 animals have been spayed or neutered through our program since 1998.”

“With poverty levels in our region well above the national average, we know how hard pet owners in our county work to make ends meet,” said DACHS Executive Director April Anaya. “With support from PetSmart Charities, families in need are able to access life-saving medical care for their pets and not be forced to make tough decisions, like surrendering their pets to already overcrowded shelters and rescue organizations.”

SNAP issues vouchers to qualifying low income induvial and families in Doña Ana County to get their family dogs and cats spayed/neutered at a free or reduced cost. Visit https://snapnewmexico.org/ or call 575-524-9265. On Facebook, visit www.facebook.com/spayneuter

DACHS serves as an advocate for animals and their owners in Doña Ana County to maintain an environment of respect, responsibility and compassion through education, legislation and leadership. The organization is committed to reducing animal overpopulation and defending the abused. Visit www.dachslc.org, call 575-647-4808 or email dachslc@gmail.com.
