DOÑA ANA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Picacho Cemetery Before and After

Posted

The Doña Ana County Historical Society (DACHS) is nearing completion of its Picacho Cemetery project, DACHS Secretary Jim Eckles said. Before (left) and after photos of the cemetery bush-clearing are shown here. The project included raising money to build a stone pillar and chain barrier along the street and install a plaque on a stone pedestal. The plaque lists the names of burials the volunteers could find records for, Eckles said. “Sally Kading and Bob Gamboa, with their volunteers and innumerable others, have done great work,” he said. The cemetery was part of Old Picacho Village located just outside Las Cruces near Shalem Colony and Fairacres. The village was part of the Mesilla Valley Civil Colony land grant of 1850, according to DACHS. Visit www.donaanacountyhistsoc.org.
