Progress club focusing on children’s advocacy, human trafficking

The GFWC Progress Club of Las Cruces gathered stuffed animals donated by its members during the club’s January meeting to donate to La Piñon Sexual Assault Recovery Services “for the children they are helping,” said club member Debbie Campbell.

The club also decorated and donated holiday stockings in December to La Piñon as part of the club’s 2022-23 initiative as advocates for children, said club President Minel Schlaefli.

Club members also noted at the meeting that January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Campbell said.

“Around the world, there are 62 million people affected (by human trafficking), with at least 400,000 in the United States and the number is growing,” the club said.

Club members will hang posters at public locations to raise awareness of behaviors and/or signs that might indicate human trafficking is taking place and to report it to the authorities, Campbell said.

The Progress Club has been serving Las Cruces since 1915, when it joined the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an international organization. The local Progress Club donates to New Mexico State University and Doña Ana Community College scholarships and to programs and organizations that benefit veterans, Children, La Casa domestic violence program and others in Doña Ana County.
