Former Aggie pitcher Tyler Sturdevant was called up by the Tampa Bay Rays Monday, May 23. Sturdevant is just the fourth Aggie in school history to have their contract selected by a major league team, joining Fernando Ramsey (Chicago Cubs), Mark Acre (Oakland A’s) and Jason Rakers (Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals).
Sturdevant, a native of Littleton, Colorado, has pitched to a 1.56 ERA in 17.1 innings with two saves and 21 strikeouts in 14 games this season for the Durham Bulls, the AAA Affiliate of the Rays. He owns a career record of 20-12 and a 2.74 ERA in 318.1 innings pitched with 22 saves and 348 punch outs. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 27th round of the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft.
Sturdevant played for the Aggies from 2005-2009. He still holds the school record for most saves by a freshman, earning four saves during the 2005 campaign. He is ninth in school history with 30 career games started and 10th in career saves with four. During his time at NM State, he pitched to a career record of 14-14 and a 6.79 ERA in 210.2 innings with 180 strikeouts.
