Most helicopters that fly to or from the roof of Memorial Medical Center are carrying patients, but a Feb. 15 flight will be carrying a young man’s dream come true.
The special flight -- thanks to the hospital and Air Methods/Native Air –will be taking helicopter-loving Sebastian Teran, 15, of Las Cruces, for a tour of his city.
In early 2019, Sebastian was brought to Memorial Medical Center to receive critical care. During his stay, he bonded with pediatric Intensive Care Unit nurse Brenda Arnett, who has sons close in age. An instant bond was formed.
Sebastian’s older brother, Logan, was killed three years ago last December. He was stationed at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska. His company was Blackhawk Helicopter base Arctic Attack 1-25th ARB. Sebastian was always fascinated by the Blackhawks and got the opportunity to sit in one while in Fairbanks for Logan's Memorial Service. That experience only escalated his passion for helicopters.
While treating Sebastian, Arnett, who once was a flight nurse, shared stories with him and mentioned her husband, Kyle, a helicopter pilot for Native Air. In hopes of helping with his recovery time, Brenda said she would try to arrange a flight once Sebastian was stable and at home.
As soon as he returned home, Sebastian reached out to Brenda to see if the flight was still possible. She said yes, and Sebastian’s dream will come true with Kyle Arnett at the controls when the flight departs and returns.
Sebastian has articulated his aspiration to have a career in nursing.
