School district appoints new board member

Posted

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education appointed Patrick Nolan April 19 to serve as the district one representative on the board, replacing Ray Jaramillo, who resigned in March.

In a ranked-choice vote, Nolan was selected over applicants Steven Foldy, Vivian Frietze, Joseph Sousa and David Tofsted, LCPS said in a news release.

Nolan currently serves as the executive director of the Friends of Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks nonprofit. He has also worked as a union representative with the American Federation of Teachers New Mexico, LCPS said.

In his interview with the board, Nolan said his passion was “building relationships, and building things that have positive impacts on people.” In his closing comments, Nolan said his service on the board will be focused on “finding balance through thoughtful leadership.”

“I was honored to have been chosen by people whom I deeply respect,” Nolan said following the board’s vote. “Shortly thereafter, I started thinking about all the questions I have and how excited I am to jump in and learn. My goal for these first few months will be to learn everything I possibly can, including the big task at hand – hiring a new superintendent.”

Nolan was sworn in April 20. His first board meeting as a board member was April 25.

Superintendent search survey

Through a contracted search consultant, LCPS is seeking input from school district parents, staff, students and community members on what qualities the next superintendent should possess, LCPS said in a separate news release.

The process for selection of the next superintendent was outlined at the school board’s April 11 work session, during which Austin, Texas-based JG Consulting was selected to lead the search. A superintendent search committee was appointed by the board, as each board member individually solicited participation from a cross-section of community stakeholders, the news release said.

The community input survey, available in English and Spanish, asks participants to prioritize qualities like being a strong communicator, community advocate and experienced educator, among others. It also asks respondents about LCPS accomplishments and challenges.

Find the survey at www.lcps.net/page/superintendent-search.

Results of the survey will be shared with the LCPS Board of Education at their April 25 regular meeting.
