A special project of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Division recorded 170 citations between Oct. 3 and Oct. 7 along a targeted section of U.S. 70 between Roadrunner Parkway and the exit to the NASA Test Facility.

The initiative was in response to complaints from residents along U.S. 70 and the East Mesa area of constant speeding and other traffic violations.

In all, 78 citations were written for speeding, two for failure to properly use child restraints, seven for driving without a license, 29 for no insurance and 28 for no registration. The remainder were for non-specific violations.

The next focus area – expected to run through Oct. 15 – is in the Talavera area of the county, southeast of Dripping Springs Road.

Doña Ana County residents are encouraged to contact the sheriff’s department if they have concerns about other areas in the county that appear to be plagued with similar traffic problems. The number in Las Cruces is 575-525-1911.
