Blank Conversations Theatre Company of Las Cruces is collaborating with the New Mexico State University student group Ember Theatre Group to present three performances of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” a short musical based on a story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, with music by Eliza Randall and book and lyrics by Sam Norman.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 1, 2 and 3 at Isabel M. Crouch Readers Theatre, located behind the Barnes & Noble bookstore at the intersection of University Avenue and Jordan Road on the NMSU campus.

Tickets are $5 at the door.

The play is directed by Eva Cullen, who is also the show’s producer. The cast is comprised of Alyssa Gose (Charlotte), Reagan Szulc (Mary), Ben Ramsey (John) and Ginny May as the pianist.

In addition to Cullen, the crew includes: Peyton Womble, musical director; Riley Merritt, stage manager/producer; Jensen Stell, producer; Mattie Ruminer, costume designer; Alia Belinte, lighting designer; Sadie Carvlin, set designer; and Vance Cook, props master. Madeleine Blair designed the production poster.

“It has been a fantastic rehearsal process with the team so far and everyone has been putting in the work considering the short turn-around time,” Cullen said. “I’m super excited to share this piece with everyone because not only did Sam Norman and Eliza Randall write this 20-minute musical beautifully, this show also covers things like mental health and the stigma behind it and our Charlotte, Alyssa Gose, has been brilliant in showing the scary consequences of lack of knowledge around mental health and how they can destroy a person. The cast and crew are incredibly talented, and this is a show that you will not want to miss,” Cullen said.

“This being my first stage management experience, I am excited to learn amongst such great friends and strong collaborators,” Merritt said. “It is such a cool experience to work on a show not just with Blank Conversations, but with Ember Theatre Company.”

“It’s been interesting figuring out how Charlotte’s character arc happens in so short of a time frame,” Gose said. “There’s so much implied passage of time in just 20 minutes, and that makes for quite a challenge.”

To reach Reader’s Theatre, take University Avenue to Jordan Road and turn south on Jordan. You can park in the parking lot behind Barnes & Noble. Reader’s Theatre is at the southwest corner of the parking lot.
