As the late Stewart Scott would often exclaim on ESPN, “Call him butter because he’s on a roll.”
New Mexico State University junior forward Pascal Siakam is sure on a roll and has set the pace for the Aggies so far this season. He notched his third 30plus game of the season and his 10th double- double of the year as he led the Aggies to a 76-61 victory against Oral Roberts on Monday, Dec. 22 at the Pan American Center.
For the season, Siakam averages 23 points per game and 12 rebounds. He’s shooting nearly 56 percent from the field.
Now the Aggies travel to Kansas Monday, Dec. 28 to tangle with a desperate Wichita State team that, after fourstraight trips to the NCAA Tournament – including a Final Four appearance in 2013 – has won just half its games so far this season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. MST Against Oral Roberts, Siakam, equaled his career- high with 35 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Aggies won their second- straight game and handed the Golden Eagles their fourthstraight loss.
The 6-9 player from Douala, Cameroon, didn’t get all of his 35 points from the inside, as he was hitting from mid-range and even scored the first 3-pointer of his career.
The Aggies used a strong performance on the glass, out rebounding ORU 41-29.
“Rebounding was an emphasis at halftime,” said head coach Marvin Menzies. “We ended up with 18 offensive rebounds with 22 second chance points.
If you can get a third of your points without calling a play, it makes your job a lot easier on the offensive end.”
The Aggies also got 12 points and six rebounds from both Johnathon Wilkins and Ian Baker, while Jalyn Pennie added seven points and seven boards.
Shockers
Now on tap for the Aggies are the Wichita State Shockers, a team looking for an identity.
The Shockers have recently had a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and, in addition to the Final Four appearance, they made the Sweet 16 twice in the past four seasons.
Still, Wichita State has started to build some momentum and have won three straight contests.
The Missouri Valley Conference team is led by senior guard Ron Baker who is rustling the net for nearly 16 points per game. The other senior guard, Fred VanVleet, who missed four games for the Shockers due to injury, is the only other Wichita State player in double digits with 11 ppg average.
NMSU’s last game before the end of the year is a home tilt at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 30 against Arizona Christian.
