Softball season starts with NM State Invitational

Softball returns to the New Mexico State University campus in a big way Feb. 10-12, in the form of the NM State Invitational.

Bradley University and Colorado State join the Aggies for seven games over three days among the three teams.

The Invitational opener is 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, with Colorado State playing Bradley.

NM State opens its season the same day with 1:30 p.m. contest against Colorado State. The Aggies then face Bradley in a 4 p.m. contest for the final Friday game.

Saturday morning, Feb. 11, Colorado State and Bradley again go at it in an 11 a.m. game.

And once again, the Aggies play at both 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., with the first game against Bradley and the nightcap against Colorado State.

The Invitational wraps up with a 10 a.m. game Sunday, Feb. 12, with Colorado State and Bradley facing off again.

As a team, the Aggies were selected to finish 10th out of 12 in the Western Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll. Grand Canyon was named the preseason favorite, receiving 10 of the 12 possible first place votes.

Kayla Bowen, a grad student from Fresno, California, was named to the Preseason All-WAC team and the lone representative for the Aggies. Last season, Bowen earned second team All-WAC honors after hitting .369 with 11 home runs and 41 RBI. Bowen paced the team in hits (59), doubles (13), and total bases (105).

The annual Troy Cox Classic will be Feb. 24- 26 with No. 3 Oklahoma State, New Mexico, Creighton, Nebraska and CSU- Bakersfield descending upon Las Cruces.
