Soroptimists International of Las Cruces donate to Mesilla Valley Community of Hope

Soroptimists International of Las Cruces (SILC) made and donated 10 baskets of supplies to Mesilla Valley Community of Hope (MVCH), and the service organization hopes to contribute more in the future, SILC said in a news release.

Seventeen of the club’s 21 members participated in the MVCH project, either donating items or money for the purchase of items for the baskets, SILC said.

“While our primary mission is to support women who pursue educational or training programs that will lead to economic stability and upward mobility for themselves and their families, we recognize that safe, stable housing makes educational success and economic stability much more likely,” SILC public awareness director Janet Brydon said in a news release. “That is why we were excited about supporting women moving into the Community of Hope apartments. It is also the reason that our Live Your Dream education and training awards provide ‘no strings attached’ funding that can be used for tuition or books or for housing, transportation, childcare or other expenses that often get in the way of those who struggle to make ends meet while going to school.”

SILC “donated baskets full of household items for women who are transitioning out of homelessness into the Desert Hope Apartments, a new 40-unit permanent supportive housing project,” said MVCH Executive Director Nicole Martinez. “The baskets contained items such as cleaning supplies, toilet paper, dish towels, hygiene items and trash bags. These thoughtful baskets show the women that the community cares about them and that we are excited for them to have a place to call home.”
