MESILLA POSTMASTER

July 31 was Andrew J. Wright’s 67th birthday. It’s also the day he retired after 16 years as Mesilla postmaster. Wright and his wife came to Las Cruces after he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1993. He worked at the Las Cruces post office before moving over to Mesilla. What will Wright miss the most?
“The people, my customers,” he said. During his tenure with the post office, Wright said he has dealt with “maybe 20” really rude, disagreeable customers. “The rest were just amazing. That ain’t bad,” he said. His customers have become like family, Wright said, and he regrets that, because of the current pandemic, he wasn’t able to engage in goodbye hugs and handshakes. “I was very fortunate to get this position,” Wright said, “because when I arrived the people greeted me with open arms. The well-wishes I’ve received go to reinforce that. I will miss that the most.” Wright said he and his wife have no plans to leave the area.
