“New Mexico is the first state to reach its criteria for re-opening,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said at a May 28 news conference. “I am incredibly proud of New Mexicans.”

The governor announced these changes in a public health order effective statewide Monday, June 1:

• Restaurants may begin indoor, dine-in service at 50 percent of maximum occupancy. Bar and counter seating and standing service is still prohibited. There must be six feet of distances between tables of seated customers.

• Hair salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, massage services and nail salons may operate at 25 percent of maximum occupancy.

• Gyms may operate at 50 percent of maximum occupancy.

• Drive-in theaters are permitted to open, along with some additional state parks.

• Hotels may operate at 50 percent of maximum occupancy.

• The state’s 14-day quarantine order for airport arrivals is amended to permit certain business travel.

Retailers and houses of worship remain at 25 percent of maximum occupancy, bars remain closed and breweries and wineries may do curbside pickup service where permitted by license. Mass gatherings are still prohibited and face masks must be worn in all public settings. Social distancing is still mandatory.

“This is really good news,” the governor said.

Lujan Grisham said the new public health order will be in effect for 30 days and can be amended.

She said virus transmission data and other criteria will determine the timeline for reopening theaters, casinos, museums, zoos, bowling alleys and large events, as well as for allowing mass gatherings.
