A U.S. Border Patrol agent was involved in a use of force incident when New Mexico State Police requested assistance during a high-speed car chase through Las Cruces on Wednesday, April 2.

Landon Hutchens, public affairs specialist for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said that at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, an Border Patrol agent assigned to Las Cruces was involved in a use of force incident. He said the New Mexico State Police requested assistance during a pursuit and failure to yield of a suspected stolen vehicle in Las Cruces.

The driver of the vehicle and another person were taken into custody by the NMSP, Hutchens said.

New Mexico State Police have not responded to a request for comment.

The use of force incident is under investigation by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Responsibility, Hutchens said.

The high-speed chase led to social media posts from community members who captured the car driving in the Legends West area.

Las Cruces Police spokesperson Dan Trujillo said the pursuit began outside of Las Cruces and entered the city.  LCPD and Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office assisted, Trujillo said.
