State Rep. Joanne Ferrary announces for re-election

State Rep. Joanne J. Ferrary, D-Doña Ana, announced March 8 she will seek re-election in House District 37, which represents portions of east Las Cruces. Ferrary defeated incumbent Republican state Rep. Terry McMillan in 2016 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2020. No other Democrat filed against Ferrary in the June 7 primary. Two Republicans filed to run for the seat.

“It has always been my goal to give the constituents in my district the representation they deserve and the support from the community has been overwhelming as I finished my third term in office,” Ferrary said in a news release. “We have done a lot of great things the last six years, including building our economy, investing in public education, protecting women’s rights, reducing hunger, strengthening guardianship procedures and fighting climate change. I know there is more to be done and I am ready to continue to be a champion for the issues that southern New Mexicans care about,” Ferrary said.

Ferrary listed these “key legislative successes” during her service in the legislature:

• Repealing the state’s antiquated abortion law in 2021;
• Securing funds to reduce hunger throughout the state;
• Advocating for the Early Childhood Education Amendment; and
• Sponsoring refundable and transferable solar tax credits for equitable clean energy.

Ferrary is chair of the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee and a voting member on the House Health and Human Resources Committee.
