State’s early education system ranked in top 25

Posted

New Mexico’s early education system is ranked 21st among all states and the District of Columbia in a survey by the personal finance website WalletHub.

For the study, WalletHub compared the 50 states and D.C. using 12 key metrics, including share of school districts (New Mexico has 89) that offer a state pre-K program, number of pre-K quality benchmarks met and total reported spending per child enrolled in pre-K.

With a total overall score of 53.55 out of a possible 100, New Mexico was ninth in accessibility, 38th in quality and 25th in resources and economic support.

D.C. was ranked first with a score of 75.41, followed by Nebraska, Maryland, West Virginia and Arkansas. The bottom five were Massachusetts, Arizona, North Dakota, Missouri and Indiana, which had a last-place score of 24.2.

“A study by the National Institute for Early Education Research showed that students enrolled in full-day pre-K programs do better on math and literacy tests than their peers who attend only partial-day preschool,” WalletHub said. “In addition, those who attend pre-K programs have been shown to have less risk of future crime than those who do not. Plus, early education programs may generate billions of dollars for the economy over a few decades, due to lessening the need for social services and creating more productive citizens.”
