STUFF THE BUS

Stuff the Bus Radiothon Raises $30,811 for Las Cruces Public Schools

Posted

“Stuff the Bus,” the annual radio-station-led school supply drive that has benefitted Las Cruces Public Schools for more than a decade, had to be modified this year in response to public health orders related to COVID-19. Prior to 2020, Stuff the Bus rallied area businesses and government agencies to help collect school supplies from the community in giant cardboard school busses. This year, monetary donations were solicited to reduce community contact in compliance with social distancing requirements.

The modified “Stuff the Bus Radiothon” campaign began July 31 with Bravo Mic Communications’ family of radio stations participating in an all-day, on-air fundraiser. Soliciting the community for donations, the phone lines were manned by volunteers such as Austin Trout, Doña Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart and many amazing LCPS staff members. In one day, $13,306 was raised by citizens across Las Cruces and beyond. Those donations were then matched at the end of the day by Ned Bennet and Sandy Zane, bringing the Radiothon’s total to $26,612. But Bravo Mic Communications continued to take online donations through the month of August, and support continued to flow in.

As of Sept. 3, Bravo Mic Communication’s crew was proud to present the LCPS Foundation with a check for $30,811, well exceeding the original goal of $10,000.

Speaking with Las Cruces Today about how LCPS plans to use those donations, LCPS Superintendent Dr. Karen Trujillo said, “…we’ve decided to use the funds raised from Stuff the Bus for headphones. That’s not something we had targeted with other funds before and all of a sudden we started getting requests from parents…so we’ve decided to use the majority of these funds for headphones for students that will be distributed to the schools.”
