ENCHANTED NEW MEXICO BOX

Subscription box company launches in Las Cruces

Heather Salopek of Legacy Pecans decided there had to be a way to help businesses and her community survive during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I saw firsthand the impact that COVID-19 was having on my retail business,” Salopek said. “I knew I was not the only small business experiencing this detrimental downturn in sales due to loss of customer traffic and especially, in my case, traffic from tourists.”

Tourism accounts for a large portion of most specialty retail sales in smaller boutique communities such as Mesilla, where Salopek’s store is located, she said.

“We have all worked too hard to build and grow our businesses, and I refuse to sit back and see any more businesses crumble under these circumstances,” Salopek said.

To help not only her store but others as well, Salopek created Enchanted New Mexico Box, a new subscription box company based in Las Cruces.

The company aims to spread a little “New Mexico nostalgia” by sending local businesses’ products to customers across the state, the country and the world.

“Each month, we will offer a different set of products sourced from New Mexico’s specialty retailers,” Salopek said. “This will allow us to help give each of these small mom-and-pop businesses a chance at survival.”.

Salopek said she’s taking the “boxes for survival” concept seriously by also becoming a major sponsor of the Las Cruces nonprofit Revolution 120’s “No One Goes Hungry In Our Community” program. The program provides more than 10,000 food boxes and 40,000 free meals to the Las Cruces community.

“Everything we do in our company is focused on our community and the people in it surviving this pandemic,” Salopek said.

The inaugural box will ship Oct. 5, containing items from Organ Mountain Outfitters, New Mexico Piñon Coffee, Legacy Pecans, The Fresh Chile Company, Santa Fe Seasons and Taos Bakes.

The cost of an individual box is $49.99, while a three-month Enchanted New Mexico Box subscription is $45 per month, and a six-month subscription is $43 a month.
