Sunrise Elementary student comes through in the ‘clutch’ to win district Spanish Spelling Bee

Posted

Sunrise Elementary School student Natalia Acosta-Briones won the Las Cruces Public Schools 2022 Spanish Spelling Bee held Feb. 17 in the LCPS Performing Arts Center at Organ Mountain High School.

Emilio Esparza of Picacho Middle School was second and Alejandro Torres Valles of Mesa Middle School was third.

Natalia’s winning word was “embargoed” (clutch), LCPS said in a news release.

She and 22 other LCPS elementary and middle-school students who had won Spanish spelling bees at their schools competed in the district competition. Natalia will represent LCPS at the state Spanish Spelling Bee in April in Albuquerque.

“It was great to see students engaged in their learning, said LCPS Superintendent, Ralph Ramos. “It isn’t easy going in front of a panel of judges and spelling words without making a mistake, but our students stood confidently and did an amazing job. I’d like to congratulate each student who participated.”
