The cooks keep coming! Hospice adds to volunteer chef list for Men Who Cook


The list of volunteers for Mesilla Valley Hospice’s upcoming Men Who Cook fundraiser continues to grow.

So far, it includes Kiel Hoffman, Javier Morales, Rick Jackson, Glenn Bollschweiler, Michael Guerra, Mike Tourtillott, Rick Altamirano, Saul Montenegro, Isaac Christie, Vince Campbell, Dean Craig, Michael Mays, Albert Barela, Derrick Harris, Carlos Padilla, Adrian Rodriguez and Michael Tirre.

“I am participating in Men Who Cook because it benefits Mesilla Valley Hospice,” said long-time Las Cruces chef Vince Campbell. “Before my mom and dad passed, they received hospice care. It is one of those services that is there for you when times are tough. Volunteering my time is just a little way I can say thank you to them. Cooking is my passion, and always has been. I am in a fortunate position where I have a great sponsor, Cindy Binns at The Grapevine Plaza and Event Center, who has sponsored me in the Taste of Las Cruces, Dress the Child and previous Men Who Cook events.

“This year I am in the category of side dishes, where I will put a New Mexico twist on a French classic,” Campbell said. “I will be working with a root vegetable, cheese and, of course, green chile!”

The 14th annual Men Who Cook will be held 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at Las Cruces Convention Center (LCCC), 680 E. University Ave.

This year’s theme is Game Night. The event will include a wide variety of board games, said Hospice Foundation Director Lorraine Padilla.

The dishes prepared by volunteer chefs are kept secret until the event, said Hospice Provider Relations Representative Staci Mays, who is this year’s Men Who Cook event coordinator.

Tickets are $100. Attendees get to sample dozens of dishes made by participating chefs and enjoy live music and an auction. There also will be tea and water stations and a cash bar.

Chefs prepare dishes in five categories: appetizer, main course, side dish, barbecue and dessert.

A panel of judges will determine winners in each category and an overall winner. Each chef will also have his own tip jar so guests “can choose the recipes they enjoy the most.”

Students from Centennial High School and Arrowhead Park Early College High School will be on hand to assist at this year’s event.
