Tell us your questions about voting processes
Happy Thursday, dear friends,
Early voting for the June 4 primary elections opened on Tuesday, and besides coverage of the candidates and matters at issue in the campaigns, we plan to report helpful information about the election processes themselves.
With some candidates for federal office casting doubt on election processes for political purposes, it is important for news organizations to illuminate how elections work and to provide the reliable information to voters, as elections and the peaceful transfer of power are fundamental to democratic participation in the republic. It is also part of this newsroom’s mission to build civic knowledge in our community. As reporter Justin Garcia wrote to you a month ago, “We think the residents of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County deserve coverage that encourages more participation and leads to a more informed electorate.”

Just as we turned to you recently asking for the questions you have for candidates seeking local office, questions that are leading our coverage of the contested elections, we invite you to tell us what you want to know about elections. What are your questions? What seems unclear to you about the process of voting, how ballots are processed and reported, the technologies in use or the auditing of the vote count and the conclusion of the canvass?
