‘Together Las cruces’ aims to help

Posted

The Las Cruces is facing economic downturn in response to state-mandated COVID-19 orders, and local tourism and hospitality service workers are among the largest group to feel the effect. Thanks to a group of local restauranteurs, business owners and philanthropists, residents of Doña Ana county won’t be fighting this battle alone.

“Together Las Cruces” (TLC) will be available to assist families during this time of need.

Managed and administered by the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico (CFSNM), the TLC fund will support grant funding to qualifying Doña Ana county residents who have been laid off or furloughed, or who have experienced a significant loss of income as a result of the state’s executive order.

To launch the fund, local businesses and donors have committed $125,000. Funds will be awarded in amounts up to $500, based on the applying individuals’ needs.

“These are uncertain times in our community, and right now our mission to serve, connect, and support southern New Mexico is more important than ever,” said Terra V. Winter, president and CEO of the CFSNM. “We are moved by the generosity of our friends and neighbors who wish to help those impacted by the health pandemic. The TLC fund will make an immediate and great impact for families in our community.”

Public health experts, the Centers for Disease Control, and the New Mexico Department of Health advise that social distancing is the most effective strategy for mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Because of this, numerous community events have been cancelled, and businesses have suspended operation at least through mid-April in an effort to maximize social distancing and minimize spread of the virus.

You can also donate via phone at 575-521-4794 or by mailing a check payable to CSFNM (for Together Las Cruces) to 2600 El Paseo Rd. Las Cruces, N.M., 88001.

The TLC fund will be managed and administered by the CFSNM. Funds will be awarded through a volunteer committee.
