Transit District installs bus benches, shelters and solar lighting

The South Central Regional Transit District (SCRTD) has announced the latest improvements to enhance safety and provide comfort for transit riders, with the installation of benches and bus shelters at twenty transit bus stops located in Dona Ana County, including Chaparral, Anthony, Sunland Park, Hatch and Las Cruces.

The bus shelters will include solar lighting equipment that not only creates a safer environment at otherwise dark bus stops, but also increases visibility, allowing bus drivers approaching the stop to better see waiting passengers. The SCRTD is leveraging a $30,000 grant from the AARP to pay for the benches and shelters.   The Transit District is paying for the administration of the project, assembly and placement of the benches and shelters and the expense of the placement of the bus pads.

The SCRTD has also initiated a separate lighting project to install standalone solar lights at a total of 25 bus shelters that are located in Santa Teresa and Sunland Park.  The solar lights can remain illuminated from dusk until dawn.  This project is programmed in Fiscal Year 2021 capital projects, based on availability of funding.

“The lighting and passenger amenities projects are yet another move to put our passengers’ safety first,” said Javier Perea, SCRTD Board Chair and Mayor of Sunland Park.  “The AARP is proud to be able to support the Transit District as it meets the needs of the community, especially seniors who need a place to rest while waiting for the bus” said David Lynch, Las Cruces Chapter, AARP.
