Tribute to veterans

Posted

Las Cruces teen Alex Smith, right, had to come up with a project to satisfy his Eagle Scout requirements, so he decided to combine his project with an honor to United States veterans. He contacted the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post on North Valley Drive and offered to place a U.S. flag-retirement box in front of the building. The VFW leaders agreed and planned to have a spaghetti dinner to raise money for his project. COVID-19 pandemic caused the dinner to be cancelled, so Smith obtained donations to accomplish his task. He purchased the retirement box, decorated it and, with help from other scouts, positioned it, painted the front part of the building and made a wooden flag to adorn the box, which is dedicated to the memory of all veterans. Pictured with Alex is his father, Duane.
