Posted

White Sands Missile Range is offering live coverage of the Trinity Site 75th Commemoration Ceremony beginning at 5:29 a.m. Thursday, July 16, through the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) at www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24439  The ceremony is not open to the public. If you miss the live feed, you can still watch it later by going to the DVIDS home page at www.dvidshub.net/ where you will find it under the "Recently Aired Events" section.

The ceremony will commemorate the test of the first atomic that was detonated at 5:29 a.m. Mountain War Time on July 16, 1945, at Trinity Site on what was to later become White Sands Missile Range. The 19-kiloton explosion not only led to the end of the war in the Pacific, but also ushered the world into the atomic age.

The ceremony will feature the illumination of the Obelisk that marks Ground Zero for the test, and the keynote address by Brig. Gen. David Trybula, Commander of White Sands Missile Range.

The Trinity Downwinders are also commemorating the first nuclear test was and bringing attention to the fact that New Mexicans still have not received Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) benefits.

RECA was passed in 1990 by the US Government to provide health care coverage and compensation to downwinders from other parts of the country but has never included the people of New Mexico. The fund has paid out over 2.3 Billion dollars in reparations to downwinders of the Nevada Test site but, according to a press release from the group, never to New Mexico downwinders.  It also provides the best health care coverage available.

Trinity Downwinders will commemorate the New Mexicans who have died from cancer and other radiation exposure related diseases during this event and read firsthand accounts of the bomb blast.

A private event where lighting of 75 glow sticks representing the 75 years since the detonation of the nuclear test will be held at the WSMR Stallion Gate – the entry way to the Trinity Site.

To view this event, at 9 a.m.,  go to www.trinitydownwinders.com.
