Veteran gets birthday surprise

Posted

Dwight Weir joined friends and family to watch more than 20 car, truck and firetruck loads of people drive past his home near Elks Drive Wednesday, July 29, providing a birthday surprise drive-by celebration. At age 83, the Navy veteran has recently been battling health issues.

He served as one of the Veteran’s Day Parade grand marshals in 2019. In 1944 Weir was assigned as a gunner’s mate on the U.S.S. Columbia, a 610-foot, 13,100-ton light cruiser nicknamed “The Gem of the Ocean.” While there he survived three kamikaze attacks in four days and participated in several battles.
