J.M. Carriere VWF Post 10124, 709 S. Valley Drive in Las Cruces, will host Stand Down, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the post to provide assistance to military veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, Len Hampton, the VFW National Council member for New Mexico, said in a news release.

The event will connect veterans with free services and resources that include contact with military service officers and information about Veterans Administration benefits, housing, VA disability services, Social Security, dental care and legal aid. It will also include comfort kits, a hot breakfast (serving begins at 7:30 a.m.), lunch, haircuts and more.

The original Stand Down for Veterans was modeled after the stand-down concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat, the VFW news release said. Today, Stand Down refers to a community-based intervention program to assist all veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless with information and services.

The "hand up not a handout" philosophy of the Stand Down is carried out through the work of volunteers and organizations in Las Cruces, the news release said.

Free van transportation to the event is available by making reservations at 575-339-3526 by no later than Sunday, Nov. 7.

For more information or to volunteer for the event, contact Hampton at 575-405-9001 and mixedcompany2@hotmail.com.

The VFW is the nation’s oldest and largest major war veterans organization. Founded in 1899, the congressionally chartered VFW is comprised entirely of eligible veterans and military service members

from the active, guard and reserve forces. It has more than 1.6 million VFW and auxiliary members in 6,200 posts worldwide.
