Wasps on the move

Posted

Paper wasps (family Vespidae, genus Polistes) are building nests around Las Cruces under the eaves of houses and in other protected areas. They get their name because they make scrapings from trees, old wood, etc., which they chew into a pulp and create paper. The wasps are considered beneficial, because they feed on garden insects. The wasps can sting but are generally not aggressive if left alone. They will sting when handled. Visit www.arthropods.nmsu.edu and www.buglab.nmsu.edu.
