LUNAFEST LAS CRUCES

Women filmmakers showcased in ‘Lunafest’

Posted

Lunafest, the fundraising film festival dedicated to championing women filmmakers and bringing women together in their communities, will be hosted by Soroptimist International of Las Cruces at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.

To ensure the health and safety of viewers during the COVID-19 pandemic, this first-ever Las Cruces screening will be livestreamed to ticketholders via Zoom and Vimeo.

The film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through seven short films by women filmmakers. The films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. They are produced by Chicken & Egg Pictures, a nonprofit organization that supports women filmmakers whose storytelling catalyzes social change.

All proceeds from Lunafest ticket sales will benefit Soroptimist Dream Programs, which provide financial assistance that helps women complete their post secondary education.

Most awardees have faced and overcome obstacles such as domestic violence, teen pregnancy, and homelessness. All awardees are their families’ primary wage earners.

The Dream It, Be It program empowers high school girls through workshops on defining goals, overcoming obstacles to success, managing money and professional etiquette.

Tickets are $20. Early-bird tickets are available for $15 until Oct. 10. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.silcnm.org.
