Together Las Cruces fund continues to grow

Together Las Cruces, launched in late March by local restaurateurs, business owners and philanthropists and supports a grant to qualifying Doña Ana county residents who have been laid off or furloughed, or have experienced a significant loss of income as a result of the COVID-19 social distancing orders. Since its launch on March 27, nearly $385,000 dollars has been raised, and more than 500 Doña Ana residents assisted. On April 10, city officials voted to provide an additional $150,000 to the fund.

Together Las Cruces grants are awarded in the amount of $100-$500, based on the applying individuals’ needs and guidelines set in place for the fund. The fund is managed and administered by the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico.

In recent weeks the community has faced economic downturn in response to state-mandated orders, and hundreds of businesses across southern New Mexico are feeling the impact. Thanks to the partnership with the City of Las Cruces, Doña Ana county residents will continue to have the opportunity to receive emergency relief funds through Together Las Cruces.

“After launching the fund and opening applications, we quickly realized how great the need is in our community for emergency relief,” said Terra V. Winter, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico. “We are grateful that the city voted to provide $150,000 to be administered through Together Las Cruces, and we continue to be moved by the generosity of our friends and neighbors who wish to help those families impacted by this ongoing health pandemic.”

Winter said that each week, the foundation is receiving more than 400 applications for the grant. Applications are reviewed by a volunteer committee before funding decisions are made and recipients are notified.

“This is a team effort – we could not accomplish this without help from volunteers and community members who are passionate about making an impact,” Winter said. “But we understand that this is only the beginning, and we are going to continue to work diligently to assist southern New Mexico during this time.”
