Youth Conservation Corp Crew Earns National Certification

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department proudly announced that all Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) summer crew members have earned Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) Certified Professional titles by completing the intensive course and qualifying exam as part of this summer’s YCC/Parks & Recreation Department grant partnership.

“Participants must pass the QWEL exam with a score of 75 or above after completing a 40-hour accelerated workshop,” said Sonya Delgado, Director of Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s a timed exam with 100 questions that test the candidate’s knowledge of the material including factual questions, calculations, and others that require the use of charts and tables. Having the entire crew pass is a major accomplishment!

”QWEL is a nationally recognized EPA Water Sense labeled certification program in irrigation system audits.The eight-member YCC crew will be conducting irrigation system audits at sports fields and parks in Las Cruces to gauge the efficiency of the irrigation systems, The YCC summer crew members are working under the same COVID-19 restrictions as all other City staff who are deemed to be essential. Among the restrictions will be social distancing, face masks, careful hand cleaning, and workspace and tool sanitation.

The goal is to evaluate the irrigation systems and the effectiveness of water-use efficiency water conservation measures recently put in place. Crew members will be scheduled to present their findings to City Council at the end of the project period. The $129,683 YCC grant was approved by City Council at the May 18, 2020 City Council meeting.

In addition to the water conservation project, the grant funds an additional YCC project in the fall that entails developing and installing murals on city property throughout the City.
