Youth Orchestra joins symphony for concerts

The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra (LCSO), under the direction of Ming Luke, will be joined by the newly formed LCSO Youth Orchestra for the symphony’s May 6-7 concerts.

LCSO will perform “Classics 4 – Tchaikovsky” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in Atkinson Recital Hall in the New Mexico State University Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on campus.

The Youth Orchestra will have about 30 students from all Las Cruces high schools performing at both the May 6 and 7 concerts, said Youth Orchestra Director Jorge Martinez Rios.

The Youth Orchestra will perform “Adios Nonino” by Argentine computer Astor Piazzolla (1921-92) to open both concerts, Martinez Rios said. The Youth Orchestra will join LCSO to perform Tchaikovsky’s “Marche Slave,” he said.

“Having a youth orchestra is a natural and important sign of musical growth in our community,” Martinez Rios said. “It also shows the amazing work music educators have been doing and their accomplishments. Their students sound great, and I can see their excitement about belonging to Las Cruces Symphony Youth Orchestra. I am excited to conduct and see this orchestra growing in the coming years.”

“The NMSU Music Department is excited to host the LCSO Youth Orchestra in our building,” said Music Department Head Fred Bugbee. “We are also very excited that NMSU Philharmonic Director Jorge Martinez Rios will be conducting the new ensemble. It is a great way for the NMSU Music Department to show our continued commitment to the Las Cruces community.”

During the May 6-7 concerts, LCSO will perform “March Slav,” “1812 Overture” and “Symphony No. 4 in F Minor,” all by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

The May 7 concert falls on Tchaikovsky’s 183rd birthday. He was born May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russian Empire and died Nov. 6, 1893 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. In addition to “1812 Overture,” Tchaikovsky composed the ballets “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker.” The house in which he was born in Votkinsk is now home to the Tchaikovsky Museum (www.russianmuseums.info/M1819). Votkinsk, which had a 202 population of almost 100,000 people is in western Russia, almost 800 miles east of Moscow.

Tickets are $42.62, $47.77 and $52.92, depending on where you sit in Atkinson Recital Hall.
