The Las Cruces Fire Department (LCFD) graduated 17 cadets from its 35th Fire Academy Dec. 16 at the Doña Ana Community College East Mesa Auditorium.

Graduates are Antonio Alvarado, Joshua Calzada, Aaron Castillo, Juan Castillo, Michael Clifton, Andrew Davis, Joshua Duran, Austin Harris, Jasen Kewshaw, Robert Lopez, Ryan Milka, Ivan Molina, Gabriel Morales, Raul Prieto, Eric Prosser, Adriana Reyes and Charles Roybal.

The Fire Academy began Sept. 12 and included 14 weeks of firefighting training in the field and classroom, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.

Twelve of the cadets who already have their EMS licenses began working in LCFD shift rotations Dec. 18, the city said. Five others will begin their shift rotations after completing an additional eight-week EMT course through the Fire Academy.

LCFD has 189 positions, with 178 filled after the academy, said Fire Chief Jason Smith. 177 of those are sworn firefighter positions, he said, and 166 will be filled after the Dec. 16 graduation

LCFD also has a fire protection engineer, two people in management analysis, an office manager, a senior office assistant, three community health providers, two case managers and one logistics specialist, Smith said.
