The Saturday, Oct. 12 opening reception for Abel Garcia’s art exhibition at the Doña Ana Arts Council Arts and Cultural Center will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by DAAC’s second Classical Drinking event with classical guitarist Marcos Cavalcante, Madelyn Moore on clarinet and Hyerim Mapp on bass. New Mexico State University professor Jim Shearer will host.
Trained in Brazil, Cavalcante has a master’s in jazz studies and a musical arts degree in classical guitar performance and literature. Before his recent move to Las Cruces, Cavalcante taught at Indiana University, the State University of Campinas (Brazil), Northern New Mexico College and El Camino Real Academy in Santa Fe.
Moore, assistant professor of clarinet at New Mexico State University, has performed and taught throughout the United States, Belgium, Spain and China.
Mapp has a Bachelor of music in cello performance from Sejong University, and both a master’s in music and a doctorate in cello performance from the University of Kansas. As a member of the piano trio Con Spirito, Mapp has performed throughout the United States.
DAAC’s first Classical Drinking event drew 71 people, DAAC Program Manager Lisa Carlson said. “It’s a relaxed setting where the audience is encouraged to ask questions about the music and the artists.”
Drinks are provided by DAAC neighbor Dry Point Distillers.
Admission is $15 and drinks are $7 each.
The DAAC Arts and Cultural Center is located at 1740 Calle de Mercado in the Bulletin Plaza.

Artist Abel Garcia, a native of Las Cruces, will be joined by tattoo artist Diane Basler-White for the opening of Garcia’s exhibition at the Doña Ana Arts Council (DAAC) 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
The opening reception is free and open to the public.
Garcia’s show will continue at DAAC through Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Garcia, an established Dallas-based artist, “draws inspiration from The Bible, hip-hop style, graffiti art and the high renaissance movement,” according to his website. “He successfully blends these differing elements into his own specific style using methods such as screen printing, acrylic painting, oil painting and graffiti.”
Garcia’s clients include the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team, the Dallas Repertoire Ballet and Las Cruces boxer Austin Trout, his website says. He was voted “Austin’s Visual Artist of the Year” in 2011 by RAW Natural Born Artists, and has shown his work in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, Atlanta, Las Cruces and New York City.
Garcia’s talents include live canvas or mural painting, timed live paintings, “trick painting” (starting a piece upside-down and flipping it to reveal an image), commissioned canvas, mural paintings, tattoo design and graphic design.
Basler-White of Syncere Tattoo Parlor in Las Cruces will be doing love tattoos as part of the opening reception. There will also be a DJ spinning tunes, DAAC Program Manager Lisa Carlson said. Basler-White is a native of Las Cruces and has been tattooing here for 12 years.
