Academy for Learning in Retirement sets speakers for spring 2023

Registration is now open for the Academy for Learning in Retirement (ALR) spring 2023 Zoom presentations, ALR said in a news release.

The 20 lectures January-May will focus on the United States Constitution, the U.S. Supreme Court, observatories, psychology and China.

The January speaker, New Mexico State University Department of History professor Jamie Bronstein, Ph.D. will discuss “The Constitution and the Supreme Court.”  Her four talks will be given Tuesdays-Thursdays Jan. 17, 19, 24 and 26.

In February, four astronomers will discuss “The Great Observatories” and what has been learned from them, ALR said. The presenters will be NMSU Astronomy Department professors Rene Walterbos, Chris Churchill, Joe Burchett and Nancy Chanover, all Ph.Ds. The presentations will be Mondays-Wednesdays, Feb. 6, 8, 13 and 15. 

NMSU Psychology Department associate professor Timothy Ketelaar, Ph.D. will discuss “Evolutionary Psychology” in four sessions in March: Mondays-Wednesdays, March 13, 15, 20 and 22. 

ALR’s April speaker is NMSU Department of History professor Ken Hammond, who will give four presentations in April about “China:  Past and Present.” His presentations will be Mondays-Wednesdays, April 10, 12,17 and 19.

ALR’s May speaker is NMSU Music Department professor Jim Shearer, Ph.D., who will present “Jazz -- Unusual People, Places and Things” Mondays-Wednesdays, May 1, 3, 8 and 10.

Each presentation will begin on Zoom at 10:30 a.m. Log-in begins at 10 a.m.

The cost is $20 for each month’s presentations or $60 for all 20 spring presentations.

ALR is a nonprofit started in 1992 by former NMSU President Gerald Thomas, along with retired deans Thomas Gale, Virginia Higbie, Flavia McCormick and others, including former professor and teacher Clarence Fielder.

ALR offers presentations from September through May each year. The presentations are often given by current or retired NMSU faculty and staff members, along with other experts.
