In a 7 p.m. start at Aggie Memorial Stadium Saturday, Sept. 2, NM State hosts Western Illinois.
After the Aggies’ 41-30 loss to UMass last week, NM State Head Coach Jerry Kill said, “Sometimes you’ve got to play the first game to see where you’re at.”
Where the Aggies are at in the turnover department is minus-three.
NM State gave up a fumble and two interceptions - one returned for a touchdown - against UMass, and forced no turnovers on defense.
In most of the phases of the game, the Aggies came out on top, besting the Minutemen in first downs (20-17), rushing yards (210-197) and passing yards (458-389), NM State stayed competitive.
Without many sustained drives, both teams relied on big plays.
There were five plays in the game for 40 years or more, and four of them resulted in touchdowns.
The Aggies’s Ahmonte Watkins had an 80-yard touchdown run in the first half. In the second half, Aggie quarterback Diego Pavia threw touchdown passes of 42 yards (to Trent Hudson) and 40 yards (to Jordin Parker).
Pavia also threw an interception that was returned by UMass for a 55-yard touchdown. The Minutemen also had a non-scoring pass play of 68 yards.
