The New Mexico State University Aggies will have a few extra days to regroup from their heartbreaking last-second defeat at Hawaii before they begin a stretch of Conference-USA games, hosting Florida International in Aggie Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4.
Yes, you read that correctly: Wednesday.
For three straight Wednesdays, followed by a Tuesday, NMSU will have Conference-USA midweek games, part of a strategy on the part of the conference to gain attention to the league’s games when other colleges are not playing. There is an agreement in place with CBS Sports Network to televise many of the games.
After hosting Florida International Oct. 4, the Aggies will host Sam Houston Wednesday, Oct. 11, in another 7 p.m. game. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, NMSU will be in El Paso to face UTEP in a 7 p.m. game. Though the Aggies and Miners have long been regional rivals, this will be the first time they’ve competed in a conference game against each other since they were members of the Border Conference in 1961. That game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Florida International will come to Las Cruces with a 3-2 record, and the Aggies are 2-3. Both teams lost to C-USA foe Liberty. FIU was at home Sept. 23 against Liberty, losing 38-6. NMSU lost to Liberty on the road Sept. 9, 33-17.
