The 113th meeting of the Aggies and Lobos kicks off 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
New Mexico State University will be looking for its second straight victory in this rivalry that dates back to 1894. The Aggies will also be looking for victory No. 2 on the 2023 season. NMSU is 1-2 on the season after falling to Liberty 33-17 Sept. 9 in Virginia. The Lobos are 1-1 on the season, having lost on the road at Texas A&M Sep. 2 and defeating Tennessee Tech 56-10 Sept. 9 at home.
Last week against Liberty, the Aggies took the first possession of the game, marched down the field and scored on a 10-yard touchdown from Jamoni Jones to lead 7-0. Then, after going ahead of Liberty 17-13, with 5 minutes left in the first half, the Aggies gave up 20 unanswered points the rest of the way.
“Their quarterback didn’t make any mistakes,” Aggie Coach Jerry Kill said after the Liberty game. “He was something. No doubt, they’re one of the better teams in the conference. That being said, you can’t turn the ball over three times and win the game. When you don’t block, you don’t tackle, you don’t do the fundamentals, eventually it’s going to catch you.”
The Liberty game also marked NMSU’s first in its new league, Conference-USA.
Saturday’s Aggie-Lobo game is on television through the Mountain West Network, and on Las Cruces radio, FM 99.5, with Jack Nixon on play-by-play and Cory Lucas as analyst.
