ARTE Institute opens registration for spring semester

The ARTE Institute for Lifelong Learning has opened registration for its spring semester, which will include expanded workshops, courses and excursions, said institute founders Kathleen Albers of Las Cruces and Kathleen Key of El Paso.

The spring semester’s courses will include History of Dutch and Flemish Art to Art Nouveau; Grand Study of Non-Western Art, Design and Style; The Scholar’s Studio: Literati Pursuits in Imperial China, French Decorative Arts; and Music History, including El Sistema and the Power of Music to Transform Lives and The Great Gustavo Dudamel.

Local outings during the semester will include Rincon de Mesilla (the spring semester kickoff in Las Cruces, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6) and Le Madeleine in El Paso, along with a Las Cruces Museum of Art tour.

Jean-Claude Linossi is joining the ARTE teaching staff in 2023 with a course in French decorative arts. He is originally from Alsace-Lorraine in eastern France and now lives in El Paso. Linossi’s interests include watercolor and encaustic wax painting, the great outdoors, plants and animals, Albers and Key said. He teaches French conversation and French culture at the University of Texas-El Paso’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Along with Albers, Key and Linossi, ARTE instructors are New Mexico State University history and linguistics professor Elvira Masson and former Mayfield High School teacher and New Mexico teacher of the year Jim Smith, who taught The Art of Teaching History online to more than 6,700 teachers in 148 countries.

Courses are offered in-person or online Feb. 6-June 14.

Unlimited access to all classes and outings is $160 per person. The price per course is $65 per person. To add a household member to either option is an additional $10.

The deadline for registration is Sunday, Feb. 5.
