Asombro Institute’s solar eclipse event is Oct. 14

Asombro Institute for Science Education (AISE) will host the final installment of its “Scientist Saturday” series for 2023, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 14, at Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park (CDNP), 56501 N. Jornada Road, about 15 miles north of downtown Las Cruces.

New Mexico State University astronomer Paul Mason, Ph.D., will be on hand at the park’s outdoor amphitheater to share his knowledge and expertise as visitors safely view a solar eclipse through a telescope, AISE said in a news release.

Visitors can also “make their own solar viewer, learn about the solar system and enjoy this special celestial event in a grand desert setting,” the news release said.

The eclipse maximum will occur around 10:30 a.m., when the sun itself will appear as a thin blazing crescent, AISE said.

AISE’s outdoor amphitheater is about one mile from the AISE parking lot off an unpaved, uphill trail.

During the event, restrooms and sheltered picnic tables will be available for use. CNNP trails will be open 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Scientist Saturdays at CDNP are free, and all ages are welcome, AISE said.
