Back 2 School Bash helps kids get ready

Families & Youth Innovations Plus (FYI+) has teamed up with Western Sky Community Care, Glitz School of Cosmetology, and Doña Ana Community College for the seventh annual Back to School event 9-11 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at DACC East Mesa Campus, 2800 Sonoma Ranch Blvd. Youth ages 5 to 18 will be eligible to receive a free backpack filled with school supplies at the event, while supplies last.

“FYI+ has been serving youth and families in our community since 1977,” said Families & Youth Innovations Plus CEO Brian Kavanaugh, “And, we promote activities like the Back 2 School Bash because all children deserve a variety of tools to support their learning, including a new backpack and supplies.”

Along with providing free backpacks, the event will feature vendors offering resources for families, free breakfast provided by FYI+’s Summer Food Service Program, on-site vision screenings by Western Sky Community Care, and vaccinations provided by the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) and Amador Health Center.

“Glitz will always be a part of giving back to the community. We fully understand how important it is for all students to have the correct school supplies to succeed in life. We are committed to helping and fulfilling educational dreams and aspirations,” said Rani Tibbs of Glitz School of Cosmetology.

Glitz will be providing coupons for free haircuts that can be redeemed at Glitz School of Cosmetology. In addition to haircut coupons to help students get ready for back-to-school, NM DOH will be providing middle school-age vaccinations (Tdap, Meningitis & HPV), and Amador Health Center will be offering COVID vaccinations and boosters for ages 5-11 and 12 & up.

“At Doña Ana Community College, we acknowledge and encourage all of our students and their families to attend these events and understand that the more engaged you are in your child’s academic career, the more likely they will be to succeed,” said Dr. Jesse Haas, DACC Associate Vice President of Student Engagement.

The event will be at the DACC Student Resource Center at 2800 Sonoma Ranch Boulevard.
