Black Box brings Ben Hur to stage

Posted

Friends! Romans! Countrymen! Lend me your - sorry, wrong play. Back in the 19th century, former American Civil War General and former New Mexico Governor Lew Wallace penned an epic story called “Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ.”

A story of an aristocratic Judean man thrown into slavery, fighting through sea battles and chariot races while also witnessing the rise of Jesus of Nazareth. Enter the Daniel Veil Theatre Collective, an ambitious group of actors who will take on the monumental task of performing all 900 pages with only four actors, no Charlton Heston needed.

However, wrong cues, missed lines, backstage drama, and malfunctioning chariots might bring the whole show down and ruin Daniel Veil’s chances to be a part of theatre history.

Autumn Gieb directs this hilarious tale where anything and everything can go wrong. Featuring veteran NSTC performers Joshua Taulbee, Rachel Thomas-Chapel, and Joseluis Solorzano and newcomer to the Las Cruces stage, William Harrold. Set design is by Karen Buerdsell, Light design is by Peter Herman, Props design is by Darlene DeMondo, and Costumes are by Autumn Gieb.

The production opens at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main St. Friday, Dec. 1, and will continue through Sunday, Dec. 17. Performances are Fridays-Saturdays, Dec. 1-2, 8-9 and 15-16 at 8 p.m., Sundays, Dec. 10 and 17 at 2:30 p.m., and a 7 p.m. performance Thursday, Dec. 14.

Tickets are $15 regular admission, $12 for students and seniors over age 65 and $10 for all seats for the Thursday, Dec. 14 performance.
