Border Jazz Orchestra has Oct. 14 concert

“The Border Jazz Orchestra (BJO) will take its audience on a trip back in time in its presentation of music made popular in the Swing Era,” beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, in the Atkinson Recital Hall in the New Mexico State University Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on campus, BJO founder Frank “Pancho” Romero said.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door or online at square.link/u/L8NEbD6I (adults) and square.link/u/zYwNUzvV (students).

Entitled “When Swing Was King,” the concert will include “In the Mood,” “Begin the Beguine,” “Cute” and “Sunset and Vine,” made popular by such band leaders as Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie – “presented with a popular twist,” Romero said. 

Arrangements by Jeff Tyzik and Bill Holman written for Doc Severinsen’s “Tonight Show Band” will be presented along with Gordon Goodwin and Bob Mintzer’s arrangements of “Cute” and “Sunset and Vine,” he said. 

BJO vocalist Jessika Brust with perform “When I Fall in Love,” “Cheek to Cheek” and “Fly Me to the Moon.” BJO member Chris Oliver will be featured with his arrangement of “Never Let Me Go.”
