Posted

For the second year in a row, Alex (club policy does not allow children’s last names to be used), 11, a student at Camino Real Middle School, won the Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces annual chess tournament, held in June and early July.

Second place for the second straight year went to Christopher, 12, a student at Sierra Middle School. Third place went to Soledad, 10, a student at Desert Hills Elementary School.

Longtime Boys and Girls Club chess program sponsor William Bradley said 24 boys and girls ages 7-17 competed in this year’s tournament.

Alex was recently honored by the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education as the New Mexico Junior Youth of the Year, Bradley said.
