Officials representing government, and the business, academic and technology sectors in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, the City of Chihuahua, and Ciudad Juárez will visit Spaceport America and Las Cruces on April 28, 2022, and April 29, 2022.

The event will be part of Economic Development Week events in Las Cruces.

“The City of Las Cruces is in a unique position to be the connection of aerospace in our region and increase the regional competitiveness of the aerospace industry,” Mayor Ken Miyagishima said. “The proximity of our City to the aerospace manufacturing clusters in the state of Chihuahua, as well as the proximity to testing, launch, research and development that occurs in Spaceport America is ideal for industry to thrive.”

The visit by government, business, academic and technology leaders from Mexico comes after Las Cruces and Doña Ana County officials visited Chihuahua in late January and Juárez in early February. City and county officials discussed economic development and other initiatives with their Mexican counterparts during the trips to Chihuahua and Juárez.

The objective of City and county officials for the visit is to introduce Mexican officials to the facilities of Spaceport America and to explore possible collaborations in the aerospace industry and strengthen this industry in the Borderplex region.

As many as 33 elected and government officials, business and academic leaders, and technology industry representatives from Mexico are anticipated to visit Spaceport America and Las Cruces. Additionally, representatives with Microsoft and Dell Latinoamerica have been invited.

The City’s delegation, led by Mayor Miyagishima, also will include City Councilor Tessa Abeyta; City Manager Ifo Pili; City Economic Development Director Elizabeth Teeters and Deputy Director Francisco Pallares; Andy Hume, Las Cruces International Airport Administrator; and Rochelle Miller-Hernandez, Visit Las Cruces Director.

New Mexico Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes will be among state officials who will participate in the two-day visit. Representatives of Spaceport America; New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center and Physical Science Laboratory (PSL); Virgin Galactic; Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance; New Mexico Border Authority; New Mexico Department of Transportation; and the Borderplex Alliance are all scheduled to attend.

The two-day event will begin with an evening of presentations and networking at the Las Cruces Convention Center, 680 E. University Ave., on Thursday, April 28. Presentations by the Space and Innovation Centers, Arrowhead Center, PSL, and Virgin Galactic will be conducted.

The tour of Spaceport America will be conducted most of Friday, April 29.
