Branigan Cultural Center (BCC), 501 N. Main St. downtown, will open a new exhibition, “The Chinese Experience in the Borderlands, 1880-1930,” Friday, July 7, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.
An opening reception will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. July 7, at BCC. Exhibit curator Jennifer McClung will discuss the research and resources that went into developing the exhibit noon-1 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at BCC.
“The exhibit discusses the use of Chinese immigrant labor in the United States and Mexico (in the late 19th and early 20th centuries) and the impact it had on regional Chinese settlements,” the city said. “It addresses anti-Chinese backlash by Borderland citizens and the governments of the United States and Mexico that resulted in anti-Chinese immigrant laws, in particular the federal Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the New Mexico Alien Land Act of 1921.
“Through this changing political landscape, a small Chinese settlement developed in El Paso, plus there was a thriving Chinese-owned truck farming business in Deming and several small businesses in Las Cruces,” the news release said. “Chinese artifacts from the El Paso settlement that were uncovered during a 1980s urban archeological excavation are featured in the exhibit.”
BCC is open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. There is no admission charge. The museum is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
