City-hosted hiking, walking events begin May 17

The City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department will host free hiking and walking events twice a week for families and friends to take part in beginning in May, the city said in a news release.

Hiking Trails in the Southwest will be Wednesdays and Saturdays during May and will take place at various locations, the city said. Hikes are open to beginner or experienced hikers and walkers of all ages who are interested in exploring the outdoors or want to improve their overall health and wellness by getting outside and moving.

Here is the schedule of hikes:

  • 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 17, Dripping Springs Trail, three-mile hike; meet at Dripping Springs Natural Area, 15000 Dripping Springs Road.
  • 9 a.m. Saturday May 20, Soledad Loop Trail, 3.4 miles; meet at 13300 Soledad Canyon Road.
  • 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 24, Slot Canyon, 2.5 miles; meet at 17198 N. Valley Drive.

9 a.m. Wednesday May 31, A Mountain, five miles; meet at the parking lot accessed from University Avenue and Dripping Springs Road, just east of the intersection with Sonoma Ranch Boulevard on the west side of “A” Mountain.

Selected trails are beginner-friendly to moderate difficulty, the city said. Anyone younger than 13 must have a parent/guardian/adult present.

No pre-registration is needed. Just show up at the appointed time and location to participate. Waivers must be signed at the site to participate.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes, sun protection and weather-appropriate clothing and should bring plenty of water.
