Comics, sci-fi and ‘all things nerdy’ invade convention center for Comic Con

Comic book and multimedia dealers from across the country will gather Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19-20, at the Las Cruces Comic Con.

The event, at the Las Cruces Convention Center, will offer a vast variety of pop-culture merchandise including comics, art, T-shirts, movie memorabilia and more. Comic book creators, writers and artists as well as actors from the television and movie industry, will be on hand to meet and greet kids young and old.

The event is a community-based experience for all that reflects today’s fandom, said organizer Troy Stegner.

“At Las Cruces Comic Con, you’ll get to indulge in all your favorite fantasy, sci-fi, and other pop culture genres, such as comics, games, film, television, and more,” Stegner said. “You’ll also get to attend panels and workshops hosted by creative pros as well as get autographs and photo ops with your favorite creators and celebrities.”

Stegner said attendees are encouraged to dress in their favorite costumes.

“Las Cruces Comic Con is a safe, nerdy environment where you can express your joy for all things nerdy with no judgment,” he said.

If people want to compete, the annual costume contest starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, and there is $2,250 in cash prizes to be awarded among three categories: Adult, kids and groups. Besides the cash, winners get trophies and bragging rights. Signup is the same day. Entry is free, but you must have a valid convention ticket to enter.

Also with a valid ticket, guests can participate in a trivia contest Sunday, Aug. 20. The winner gets a trophy, swag and the label of being the smartest person in the room.

On-site autograph authentication is available with JSA. According to lascrucescomiccon.com, the “JSA trusted and coveted certification enhances the value and marketability of your items. Your certificate of authenticity includes a JSA registration card with a unique certification number that corresponds to the alpha-numeric tamper evident label. Each certification number is uploaded into our exclusive database for 24-hour customer verification access.”
