Doña Ana Community College dental and nursing programs and the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation will host “Happy Smiles,” a free dental clinic, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, March 20-23, in Alex Sanchez Hall on the DACC Espina campus, 3400 S. Espina St. on the New Mexico State University campus.
The goal of the clinic is to improve and promote oral health and overall health for Doña Ana County residents who have limited resources, DACC said in a news release. Participants will receive free preventive services, including dental cleanings, radiographs and fluoride treatments.
According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tooth decay (cavities) is one of the most common chronic conditions of children in the United States, DACC said. CDC researchers have also found evidence of plaque and tooth decay leading to diabetes, heart disease, stroke and premature, low-weight births, the news release said.
The clinic is by appointment only, as space is limited. Call 575-528-7071 to schedule an appointment. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 18 who receives dental care.
The event will also include a community health fair, Healthy Bodies, Happy Smiles, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in Alex Sanchez Hall and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, March 24, at DAAC’s Gadsden campus, 1700 O’Hara Road in Anthony, New Mexico.
DACC nursing students and community partners will provide health resources and screenings to community members during the health fair, which is free and open to the public. No appointments are necessary to participate.
