Community Theatre has auditions for ‘True West’

Posted

Las Cruces Community Theatre (LCCT) will hold auditions for “True West,” written by Sam Shepard and directed by Michael Wise, 6-7:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, Aug. 13-14, at LCCT, 313 N. Main St.

LCCT will cast male actors ages mid-20s to early 40s. The female role of “Mom” has already been cast.

Auditioners do not need to prepare anything for the auditions, which will be cold readings from the script.

“True West” follows the story of two estranged brothers, Austin and Lee. Austin is a straight-laced/ivy-league graduate who has a successful budding career as a screenwriter in the film industry, LCCT said. Austin is housesitting for his mother (“Mom”) in southern California while he works on a new screenplay. Lee (Austin’s older brother) is a beer-drinking drifter and a petty thief who unexpectedly shows up and proceeds to disrupt Austin’s life, eventually managing to take over the writing of the screenplay himself after conning Saul ( a movie producer who is interested in Austin’s script) into supporting his project over Austin’s screenplay. The two brothers end up in a role reversal, with each admitting that he has always envied the other's way of life. Think Cain and Abel in suburbia.

Rehearsals of “True West” are tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 28, at LCCT. Rehearsals will be 6-9:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday. There will be nine performances of “True West” Oct. 6-22 at LCCT.
